Person Centred Counselling
Person-Centred Counselling, developed by Carl Rogers, emphasises clients’ subjective experiences, fostering a supportive, non-judgmental environment for self-exploration and growth. Therapists demonstrate unconditional positive regard, empathy, and genuineness, facilitating a trusting therapeutic relationship. Clients are empowered to tap into their inner resources, gaining insight and making positive changes aligned with their values and goals. This approach prioritises the client’s autonomy and self-direction, allowing them to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences freely. Ultimately, Person-Centred Counselling aims to promote self-awareness, personal growth, and authenticity, helping clients live more fulfilling and meaningful lives.
Transactional Analysis
Transactional Analysis (TA) is a counselling approach that focuses on understanding and improving interpersonal relationships and communication patterns. From a counsellor’s point of view, TA provides a framework for analysing the interactions between individuals, helping clients recognise and change unhelpful patterns of behaviour. It uses concepts such as ego states (parent, adult, child), transactions, and life scripts to explore how past experiences influence present behaviour. The counsellor helps clients gain awareness of their own ego states and transactional patterns, empowering them to make conscious choices and develop healthier relationships. TA aims to promote personal growth, emotional well-being, and effective communication skills.
Gestalt Therapy
Gestalt Therapy is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on the present moment and the individual’s experience within it. It emphasises awareness of one’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, as well as personal responsibility for them. In Gestalt Therapy, the therapist and client work together to explore the client’s present experiences and how they relate to past experiences and future goals. This is often done through experiential techniques such as role-playing, empty chair exercises, and focusing on bodily sensations. The goal of Gestalt Therapy is to help clients gain insight into their patterns of behaviour, resolve unresolved issues, and develop greater self-awareness and self-acceptance.
Humanistic Therapy
Humanistic therapy, rooted in the belief of individual potential, focuses on self-actualisation and personal growth. Therapists provide a supportive, non-judgmental environment where clients explore their feelings and experiences. This approach emphasises self-awareness, self-acceptance, and personal responsibility. Therapists offer empathy, genuineness, and unconditional positive regard to foster a trusting therapeutic relationship. Humanistic therapy encourages clients to take an active role in their healing process, making choices aligned with their values and goals. It aims to enhance self-understanding, promote emotional well-being, and facilitate authentic living. By honouring the client’s unique perspective, humanistic therapy empowers individuals to cultivate meaningful and fulfilling lives.
Integrative therapy
Integrative therapy blends techniques from various therapeutic modalities to tailor treatment to each client’s unique needs. Therapists draw from approaches like cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and humanistic therapy to address a range of issues. The key is flexibility, allowing therapists to adapt their approach based on the client’s preferences and progress. Integrative therapy aims to provide a comprehensive and personalized framework for promoting healing and growth. By integrating diverse techniques and theories, it offers clients a holistic approach to therapy, empowering them to explore different avenues and find solutions that resonate with their individual experiences and goals.
